2021 Board of Directors Election Results

2021 Board of Directors Election Results

Northeastern’s service area is divided into nine districts. Members are given the opportunity to select a representative from their area to serve on the board of directors. Each year, at the cooperative’s annual meeting, three district director positions are filled. The board is the legal body that both the member and the government hold accountable for the actions of the organization.

What does a board member do?

The board of directors is the governing body of the organization. The board sets policies and strategic direction.

Who is the ideal candidate for a board member?

The ideal candidate to serve a three-year term on the board of directors is someone who is passionate about Northeastern REMC's mission and the community we serve. A background in a business-related field is a plus. If you're eager to learn more about the economical operation of the cooperative while working in harmony with the whole board, this is a position for you.

Who is eligible?

Based on the Northeastern REMC bylaws, residential members are eligible to serve a three-year term on the board of directors if they are a member of Northeastern REMC and receive electrical services at their primary residence.

Close relatives of any incumbent director or of an employee of the cooperative at the time of election to the board may not run for election. Also, employees or anyone who has been employed by the co-op in the last five years cannot run.

What is the time commitment of a board member?

Directors are expected to attend all board meetings, committee meetings and the Northeastern REMC annual meeting in September each year.. Directors should also attend one National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) meeting or director’s conference every year.

Other meetings directors attend include one and two-day educational seminars. Directors are encouraged to complete their NRECA Credentialed Director’s Certificate during their first term.

This equals around 30 days each year representing Northeastern REMC.

What is the election process like?

Each year, at the cooperative’s annual meeting, three district director positions are filled.

Prior to the election, a nominating committee carefully reviews board applications and interviews prospective board members. Once this has taken place, candidates are announced to the public.

Voting begins in early summer and can be done online, by mail, or in the lobby at Northeastern REMC.

How many terms can I serve?

Currently there is no term limit for board members. At the end of each three-year term, board members are allowed to run again by following the same election process as any other candidate.
