Democratic Member Control

Board of Directors' Election

Did you know cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by members like you? Members actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. This all happens through electing a board of directors.

How it works:
Northeastern’s service area is divided into nine districts. Each year, board of director elections are held, three of the nine positions are filled, and these directors serve a three-year term.

Members are given the opportunity to select a representative from their area to serve on the board of directors. The board is the legal body which both the member and the government hold accountable for the actions of the organization.

Districts 5, 6, and 7 will participate in the election this year. The deadline to apply and have your application considered by the nominating committee is April 11, 2025.

The board of directors is the governing body of the organization. The board sets policies and strategic direction.

The ideal candidate to serve a three-year term on the board of directors is someone who is passionate about Northeastern REMC’s mission and the community we serve. A background in a business-related field is a plus. If you’re eager to learn more about the economical operation of the cooperative while working in harmony with the whole board, this is a position for you.

Based on the Northeastern REMC bylaws, residential members are eligible to serve a three-year term on the board of directors if they are a member of Northeastern REMC and receive electrical services at their primary residence.

Close relatives of any incumbent director or of an employee of the cooperative at the time of election to the board may not run for election. Also, employees or anyone who has been employed by the co-op in the last five years cannot run.
Directors are expected to attend all board meetings, committee meetings, and the Northeastern REMC annual meeting in September each year. Directors should also attend one National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) meeting or director’s conference every year.

Other meetings directors attend include one and two-day educational seminars. Directors are encouraged to complete their NRECA Credentialed Director’s Certificate during their first term.

Each year, at the cooperative’s annual meeting, three district director positions are filled. Prior to the election, a nominating committee carefully reviews board applications and interviews prospective board members. Once this has taken place, candidates are announced to the public. Voting begins in August and can be done online, by mail, or in the lobby at Northeastern REMC.

Currently, there is no term limit for board members. At the end of each three-year term, board members are allowed to run again.
