Northeastern REMC (NREMC) recently sponsored three local students at the annual Camp Kilowatt held at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana.
Students from all over Indiana attended the camp from June 7-10, representing their local electric cooperatives.
NREMC selected the following students that attended Camp Kilowatt this year:
Clark Patterson, South Whitley
Isaac Hilger, Fort Wayne
Izabella Love-Epperson, Fort Wayne
These three students were selected through an application process by NREMC to participate in the four-day program. The students’ agenda combined traditional outdoor camp activities with environmental education, electrical safety practices, and cooperative business education.
Many students experienced some activities for the first time, like horseback riding, rock climbing, archery, and ziplining.
While learning about electricity, students saw a live line safety demonstration from area electric cooperatives lineworkers. They also got a bird’s eye view of the camp when they had the opportunity to accompany a lineworker in a bucket truck.
“This was a great way for students to learn about the role of the electric cooperative in their community. On top of that, they experienced all the fun of camp,” said Christopher Todd, marketing director at NREMC.
A committee of electric cooperative employees from Indiana developed the Camp Kilowatt program many years ago. The camp is funded in part by Indiana’s electric cooperatives, Hoosier Energy, Wabash Valley Power Alliance, Indiana Electric Cooperatives, and other industry partners.
