Summary of Terms

At Northeastern REMC, transparency is a top priority. We want you to understand the meaning behind every charge on your bill. Below, you’ll find a summary of each charge. If you have questions or need further clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to review your bill with you in detail.

Service Charge

The service charge is a minimum amount each meter is charged monthly to cover a portion of the fixed costs Northeastern REMC incurs to have electric service available to your home or business.

These costs include substations, poles, power lines, transformers, meters, taxes, and administrative expenses.

Energy Charge

The total energy used over that billing period measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) multiplied by the per kWh rate. Some rates include both on-peak and off-peak energy charges.

Put simply, the total energy used x rate per kWh = energy charge

For residential members, here is an example of your meter reading. If your October meter reading was 5704 and your November meter reading is 5977, that means you used 273 kilowatt hours.

PJM Cost

PJM, the Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland Power Pool, is a regional transmission organization that coordinates the flow of electricity for over 61 million people across 13 states and D.C. Northeastern REMC and other Indiana utilities are required to belong to such organizations. This cost helps cover mandated participation and related charges.

PJM ensures enough power to meet demand, maintains grid reliability, and oversees the market to prevent manipulation. Electricity flows through PJM regardless of where it’s generated.

Power Cost Adjustment (PCA)

As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, Northeastern REMC provides electricity at cost, without profit. Electricity is purchased from the open market at the best available rate. To keep monthly rates consistent despite fluctuations in generation costs, the Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) is calculated monthly.

When wholesale power costs are below the base rate, the difference appears as a credit on your bill. The PCA reflects changes in power costs, primarily due to fuel price fluctuations, and is listed as a separate line item on all bills. Northeastern REMC receives no benefit or profit from the PCA.

Miscellaneous Charges

Click the tab to learn more about additional charges, such as late fees, insufficient funds, or extra meter readings. While most members won’t encounter these charges, we’re here to help if you believe a fee has been applied in error. Please contact our member services team for assistance.

Late Payments

In the event that the current monthly billing is not paid on or before the stated due date, a late payment charge of ten percent (10%) for the first $3.00, plus three percent (3%) of the amount in excess of the first $3.00 will be added to the net bill. The gross amount due, as shown on the billing statement, includes the late payment charge.

Security Deposits

All new accounts and previously disconnected accounts being reconnected are subject to our deposit policy.

The deposit will be collected prior to service connection. Other circumstances may warrant charging a deposit as determined by Northeastern REMC. When a member applies for service, an online utility soft credit check will be completed. Based on the response, members with excellent credit will not have a deposit.

Members may be required to pay a deposit between $0-$200 based on their credit rating and payment history with the co-op. No interest shall be paid on any deposits. Deposits will be refunded when membership is terminated.

Disconnect/Reconnect/Collection Charges

Collection/Disconnection/Reconnection Fees

All disconnect and reconnect charges are in addition to any outstanding balances.

Disconnection: $60
Disconnection when line truck is required: $110

Reconnection: $60 ($110 after 4pm)
Reconnection when line truck is required before 4pm: $110

Insufficient Funds

When a check is received for a payment on a member’s account and is returned, the member shall be assessed a returned check fee of $25.00 for each check returned by the bank. Electronic payments made either through Northeastern REMC’s website or through a paying agent service,  which are returned non-payable, shall be assessed a handling charge of $25.00 for each returned item.

Meter Reading

When a condition exists that requires a special trip to obtain the meter reading, the member will be charged $60.00 per trip. This charge will be added to the member’s monthly bill.

Meter Test Requested by Member
Northeastern will endeavor to maintain the efficiency of the meters within the allowable accuracy prescribed by the Indiana Administrative Code Title 170 Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Article 4 Electric Utility. Northeastern will make a test of accuracy of registration on a meter upon a written request of a member. If the member requests a meter test within twelve (12) months of the last test and no error is found, then the member will be charged $60.00 for the meter test. This charge will be added to the member’s monthly bill.

Same Day Meter Service Charge
Should a member request a meter be installed or a meter reading be taken on the same day they pay their membership, Northeastern will charge $60.00 during normal business hours and $110.00 after normal business hours for this service. These charges are non-refundable.

Member False Call-Out Charge

If Northeastern personnel respond to a member call and discover the cause of the power outage is located on member’s side of the meter (e.g., tripped breaker, blown fuse, etc.), a charge of $110.00 during normal business hours and a charge of $195.00 after normal business hours will be assessed. Northeastern is not obligated to make repairs to the member’s equipment, which is located on member’s side of the meter.

Temporary Facilities Charge

The intent of temporary service is to provide light-duty electrical service, in accordance with the Corporation’s “Electric Standards Manual”, for construction purposes until a permanent service has been established.

Northeastern will furnish necessary pole and entrance equipment for temporary service. Northeastern may require the member to pay, in advance, a one-time $140.00 charge for each temporary service. The applicable billing rate will also apply to energy use for this service. If the member or its representative (e.g., contractor) provides their own temporary service  facilities, Northeastern may require the member to pay, in advance, a one-time $100.00 charge for each service connection. In addition, the member shall incur a $60.00 inspection charge for each trip.

If the temporary is returned to Northeastern REMC with incidental damages outside normal wear and tear, the member will be charged $65 for repairs. If the temporary is returned damaged and it is not repairable, the member will be charged $200.

New Service Fee

The new service fee is a one-time $300 charge for any new construction on the Northeastern system. This flat fee is charged for all new metered service points requiring new equipment installed at the location. The new construction service fee does not include other temporary or new member charges or fees. Additional charges may apply depending on the equipment that needs to be installed and the projected electrical use at the new location.
