What if paying your electric bill was like buying gas for your car?
When you stop at the gas station, you're buying fuel before using it. When you run out, you add more. Similarly, purchasing electricity before using it allows you to control your budget and pay how much you want when you want. And there are no security deposits or late fees. Instead of a monthly bill, your usage and balance are calculated daily.
How it works
You purchase electricity before you use it. Payments can be made when you want – online, over the phone, or in-person at our office. When your account runs low, you will get an alert by email, phone call, text, or all three letting you know it's time to recharge your account.
You must maintain a credit balance while on prepaid. If your account runs out of funds, your service is disconnected until you add more, but you are not charged additional fees.
Why it's a good choice
• Choose your payment schedule
• Purchase electricity when convenient
• Monitor electric use
• No deposits, late fees, or surprise monthly bills
As long as you maintain a credit on your prepaid account, you can make payments daily, weekly, monthly, or as often as you want– the choice is yours to make.
Your prepaid meter is read each morning at 9 a.m. You will receive alerts through your online account notifications, by email, text messages, or all three if your prepaid balance is low. If you don't have enough money in your account to cover usage, your meter will automatically disconnect at 10 a.m. If you are disconnected, all you need to do is get a minimum credit balance of $25.00 for your meter to reconnect automatically.
That's right. There are no disconnect, reconnect or any type of additional fees when you're using prepaid billing.
This is where prepaid billing really helps! For accounts disconnected for non-payment, a $50 payment is all that is required to establish your prepaid account.
Your past due amount is converted to debt recovery and will be paid down with every payment you make, giving you the ability to keep the lights on while simultaneously paying down your debt.
Plus, any existing deposit on your account will be applied toward the debt recovery balance helping you get it paid off even quicker! After your prepaid account is activated, any payments made will be split 50/50 between your current usage and debt recovery balance. After paying off your debt recovery, 100% will go to your current or future usage.
A minimum payment of $50.00 is required to start your prepaid account. 100% of your payments will credit to your prepaid electric usage if you do not have a debt recovery balance.
New NREMC members will be charged a $15 membership fee.
