Rates

Northeastern's objective is to provide safe and reliable electric service to its members. Our rate structure reflects the cooperative's delivery and power supply costs. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, any profits are returned to Northeastern members through Capital Credits.

Meter Test Requested by Member
Northeastern will endeavor to maintain the efficiency of the meters within the allowable accuracy prescribed by the Indiana Administrative Code Title 170 Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Article 4 Electric Utility. Northeastern will make a test of accuracy of registration on a meter upon a written request of a member. If the member requests a meter test within twelve (12) months of the last test and no error is found, then the member will be charged $60.00 for the meter test. This charge will be added to the member's monthly bill.

Same Day Meter Service Charge
Should a member request a meter be installed or a meter reading be taken on the same day they pay their membership, Northeastern will charge $60.00 during normal business hours and $110.00 after normal business hours for this service. These charges are non-refundable.

If Northeastern personnel respond to a member call and discover the cause of the power outage is located on member's side of the meter (e.g., tripped breaker, blown fuse, etc.), a charge of $110.00 during normal business hours and a charge of $195.00 after normal business hours will be assessed. Northeastern is not obligated to make repairs to the member's equipment, which is located on member's side of the meter.

The intent of temporary service is to provide light-duty electrical service, in accordance with the Corporation’s “Electric Standards Manual”, for construction purposes until a permanent service has been established.

Northeastern will furnish necessary pole and entrance equipment for temporary service. Northeastern may require the member to pay, in advance, a one-time $140.00 charge for each temporary service. The applicable billing rate will also apply to energy use for this service. If the member or its representative (e.g., contractor) provides their own temporary service  facilities, Northeastern may require the member to pay, in advance, a one-time $100.00 charge for each service connection. In addition, the member shall incur a $60.00 inspection charge for each trip.

If the temporary is returned to Northeastern REMC with incidental damages outside normal wear and tear, the member will be charged $65 for repairs. If the temporary is returned damaged and it is not repairable, the member will be charged $200.

The new service fee is a one-time $300 charge for any new construction on the Northeastern system. This flat fee is charged for all new metered service points requiring new equipment installed at the location. The new construction service fee does not include other temporary or new member charges or fees. Additional charges may apply depending on the equipment that needs to be installed and the projected electrical use at the new location.

Summary of Terms

Transparency is important to us at Northeastern REMC. We want you to know what each charge means. Below, you'll find a summary of these different charges. For further explanation about your bill, please see Understanding your bill section or contact us. We're happy to dive into your bill with you.

Click below to expand each section to learn more.

Service Charge

The service charge is a minimum amount each meter is charged monthly to cover a portion of the fixed costs Northeastern REMC incurs to have electric service available to your home or business. These costs include substations, poles, power lines, transformers, meters, taxes and administrative expenses.

Energy Charge

The total energy used over that billing period measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) multiplied by the per kWh rate. Some rates include both on-peak and off-peak energy charges.

Put simply, the total energy used x rate per kWh = energy charge

How do we determine how much energy is used?
Your meter keeps track of kilowatt hours automatically. When you bill is calculated, the meter reading of the current month is compared to the meter reading of the last month.

For residential members, here is an example of your meter reading. If your October meter reading was 5704 and your November meter reading is 5977, that means you used 273 kilowatt hours.

PJM Cost

PJM is a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity to over 61 million people in all or parts of 13 states. Northeastern REMC and other Indiana electric utilities are required to belong to a regional transmission organization. This cost helps your cooperative cover its mandated participation and charges related to it.

What does PJM stand for?PJM stands for the Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland Power Pool. It is the electricity control area (the electric grid) for New Jersey and all or parts of in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. All electricity essentially comes from PJM regardless of the state in which it was generated. PJM ensures that there is enough power to meet expected customer electricity demand at all times, plus an additional reserve margin. Through this process, PJM ensures the electric grid's reliability and monitors the market to prevent market powers/manipulation.

Power Cost Adjustment (PCA)

As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, Northeastern REMC provides electricity to you at cost; meaning Northeastern does not profit from selling you electricity. That electricity that comes to your home or business is purchased from the open market at the best rate available. The Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) is calculated each month and allows Northeastern's monthly rates to stay consistent rather than changing every time the generation cost of energy fluctuates.

Some months, the cost of wholesale power is actually below the base rate. The difference appears on your electric bill as a credit.

The Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) is an adjustment made to your electric bill to reflect fluctuations in the true cost of power purchased from Northeastern's provider. The fluctuation is largely caused by changes in the cost of fuel for generation. It appears as a separate line item on each member's bill each month. This adjustment is applicable to and becomes a part of all of the Northeastern REMC’s retail rates schedules and is applicable to all sales. Northeastern receives no benefit or profit from the PCA.
