Northeastern REMC took the lead on two local projects.
Columbia City, IN – Northeastern REMC (NREMC), a member-owned electric cooperative powering six counties in Northeast Indiana participated in Co-Op Community Day on Friday, October 13. Each year, electric cooperatives across Indiana complete projects that meet a specific need within their service area. A group of employees from NREMC worked on projects for the Salvation Army of Whitley County and the Izaak Walton League in Huntertown.
The Salvation Army has a furniture barn on the property of Columbia City United Methodist Church on the west side of Columbia City. With the executive director and board members of the Salvation Army, NREMC helped sort through recent donations, organized furniture, created space for more donations and even helped connect people to get much-needed items.
In Huntertown, NREMC sent a crew to dig holes and set poles for a bat habitat at the Izaak Walton League, a community-based conservation organization with chapters all across the United States. Bat houses will be attached to the poles at 10 or 20 feet high to create a shelter where bats can sleep during the day before participating in their nocturnal activities. Bats are essential in pollinating plants, pest control, and dispersing seeds. Providing shelter for bats is a great way to promote a healthy environment, which is an important initiative of Izaak Walton leagues across the country.
This community day is hosted by Indiana Electric Cooperatives and 22 of Indiana’s electric cooperatives completed close to 30 projects that meets a specific need within their service area. This initiative provides the electric cooperatives the opportunity to use their time, skills and expertise to make a positive impact throughout the state of Indiana.
Employees who helped with these projects included lineworkers, member service representatives, engineers, meter technicians and more.
