Two local teenagers were recently awarded $1000 college scholarships from Northeastern REMC, a member-owned electric cooperative powering six counties in Northeast Indiana. For the past several years, Northeastern REMC (NREMC) selects two high school seniors in their service area to receive these awards.
The first scholarship recipient is Katherine Bernard, daughter of Scott and Karin Bernard, a senior at Carroll High School. Bernard has balanced her time and academics with the band program (marching, concert, jazz, and pep band) at her high school while also working part-time at Panera Bread. She is also involved in her youth group at Pine Hills Church and volunteers at a local food bank. In a letter of recommendation, her band director describes her as having a “kind and gentle spirit that demonstrates her selflessness and is always doing what she can to make her environment warm, caring and inviting.” Bernard plans to study business at Taylor University next fall.
The second scholarship was awarded to James Langmaid, son of John and Shannon Langmaid, who resides in South Whitley and attends Canterbury School. Langmaid achieved the Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America while also participating in choir, soccer, baseball, and swimming. A letter of recommendation by his college counselor at Canterbury describes James as someone who elevates class discussions and is an active member of the school community by supporting other students. The letter also noted that his accomplishment as an Eagle Scout “is a great testament to his character.” Langmaid plans to study political science at Wabash College next fall.
Northeastern REMC makes its decision based on scholastic achievement, community involvement, and recommendations. “We are proud to offer this scholarship program each year” said Eric Jung, CEO of Northeastern REMC. He continued, “There is no better way to encourage our local students in their pursuit of higher education than giving them financial help.”
