Columbia City, IN – Northeastern REMC is proud to celebrate the exceptional achievements of Amy Brown, a Whitko High School senior and intern at Northeastern REMC, for her pivotal role in the co-op’s new agrivoltaics program and her continued dedication to community and academic excellence.
On Friday, the Kosciusko Community Foundation announced Brown as one of their two recipients of the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. This four-year, full-tuition scholarship enables recipients from each participating Indiana county to attend an Indiana college or university of their choice.
Brown has demonstrated outstanding leadership by spearheading the agrivoltaics initiative at Northeastern REMC’s Quarry Solar site. This innovative program integrates agricultural practices such as sheep grazing and pollinator-friendly habitats, blending local farming traditions with modern land use practices.
“Amy has been an integral part of this project from its inception,” said Eric Jung, President and CEO of Northeastern REMC. “Her passion for agriculture and her commitment to the people we serve has been essential to launching this program. We couldn’t be prouder of her contributions, both at Northeastern and in the community.”
In addition to her work at Northeastern REMC, Brown has excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. She was recently named Whitko High School’s Student of the Month and has successfully balanced her studies with a variety of commitments. Brown is active in FFA (formerly known as Future Farmers of America), National Honor Society, 4-H, Student Council, and other organizations, all while running her own sheep business. Her entrepreneurial drive and dedication to agriculture have inspired her to pursue a degree in agricultural marketing and communication at Huntington University.
“Growing up surrounded by agriculture has shaped my passion for this field,” said Brown. “Running my own sheep business has taught me the importance of communication and networking in the agriculture industry. I’m excited to share my love for agriculture and inspire the same enthusiasm in others.”
Northeastern REMC’s Quarry Solar site will launch with the agrivoltaics program at its core, showcasing the benefits of combining agricultural practices with innovative land use strategies. Brown’s contributions have built a strong foundation for the program’s success, demonstrating the power of collaboration and leadership within the community.
