Northeastern REMC recently sponsored two local students for the Indiana Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., from June 16-23. This tour offers young Hoosiers a chance to explore the nation’s capital, learn about government, experience American history, and gain insights into their electric cooperatives and governance.
A group of 75 Indiana students representing electric cooperatives statewide joined the national assembly in Washington for this enriching week-long experience.
The students representing Northeastern REMC on the Youth Tour are:
• Natalie Harning from Carroll High School
• Mason Schuckman from Columbia City High School
“Northeastern is pleased to provide this opportunity for our local youth,” said Christopher Todd, marketing director at Northeastern REMC. “It’s a great trip and a wonderful chance to see the sites, make new friends, and learn how everyone, even young people, can make a difference in the political process.”
During the trip, students visited various sites such as the Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield, Arlington National Cemetery, National Museum of the Marine Corps, and Smithsonian museums. They also explored the National Mall memorials and the Library of Congress and enjoyed a Washington Nationals baseball game.
As part of the Indiana Youth Tour, students engaged in a youth rally by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. They spent a day on Capitol Hill, interacting with Indiana's congressional representatives, including Senator Todd Young. Additionally, they had an unexpected visit from Miss USA Savannah Gankiewicz, who stopped by to meet the delegation.
