Northeastern REMC recently sponsored two local students on the Indiana Youth Tour that took place June 11-18 in Washington D.C. Youth Tour provides young Hoosiers the opportunity to visit the nation’s capital, learn about government, experience American history, and gain a better understanding about their electric cooperative and government.
A delegation of 75 Indiana students representing electric cooperatives across the state went on this trip, convening with students from across the country in Washington for the weeklong experience.
The following students are representing Northeastern REMC on Youth Tour:
Cyle Cox, Columbia City
Mya Lassen, Fort Wayne
“Northeastern is pleased to provide this opportunity for our local youth,” said Christopher Todd, marketing director at Northeastern REMC. “It’s a great trip and a wonderful chance to see the sites, make new friends, and learn how everyone, even young people, can make a difference in the political process.”
Students visited the Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield, Arlington National Cemetery, National Museum of the Marine Corps, and Smithsonian museums. The delegation also toured the National Mall memorials, The Library of Congress and even got to take in an evening of baseball at the Washington Nationals game.
The Indiana Youth Tour students participated in a youth rally hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. They spent a day on Capitol Hill, where they met with Indiana’s congressional delegation to ask questions and share their thoughts on a variety of timely issues. They heard from Senator Mike Braun, Congressman Jim Baird, Congressman Jim Banks, Congresswoman Erin Houchin, Rep. Larry Bucshon, U.S. Representative Greg Pence, and Congressman Rudy Yakym.
